While NASA achieving an internet speed of 91 GB/s has been all the hype for the past decade, Japan has left that landmark long behind, obtaining a milestone that would put your ISP to shame.

Having the ability to download your favorite games like Baldur’s Gate 3 or the latest Call of Duty within seconds sounds like an awesome idea at first, but Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology has taken it to the next level, summing the time down to milliseconds.

Japan Hits New Records: Will Gamers Be Able to Download Baldur’s Gate 3 at Insane Speeds?

The most interesting part about the record is that it was set using a commercially available fiber-optic cable, meaning that the researchers made use of a cable often used to bring internet to many of our homes.

The world record speeds, according to the official report, were 402 TB/s and recorded a 37.6 THz optical bandwidth. To explain in layman’s terms, if this same internet speed were offered to a gamer, they would then be able to download Baldur’s Gate 3, a game that requires 150GB of storage, in merely 4 milliseconds.

The new speeds, which are likely to remain unavailable to the common man for a few more decades from now, bring with them many possibilities concerning the gaming industry, which is one of the most heavyweight consumers of the service.

Not only does it open up the door to ultra-fast downloads, but with certain developments in the right direction, the connection can essentially be reworked for certain scenarios, like eSports or live-service games.

Despite it being true that an internet speed that gets anywhere near 402 TB/s will have an absurdly large bill to pay, that should not stop someone from speculating about the future, and it looks amazing from now on.

Currently, players are limited by the technology of their time, as most of the hardware installed in their average system will prove to be a huge bottleneck even if they somehow manage to get ahold of the new record-breaking internet speeds.

However, if calibrated accordingly, then the research can surely be used to level up how eSports is played around the globe, allowing players to compete from different regions with high speeds and an ultra-low ping, something that remains fictional for now.

Additionally, as the internet service improves over time, gamers are sure to see better live-service events within games, allowing developers to ultimately update the game on the backend as players continue to play and enjoy it.

Have a game in mind that you will download if given the new record-breaking internet speeds? Make sure to let us know about it in the comments below!
