In games made by Hidetaka Miyazaki, one can always find the threads of narration and storytelling woven together in a complicated manner, leaving all the players on their own accord to theorize and fill the gaps left by the studio. One such theory that has arisen recently goes over how one of the endings from Demon’s Souls, the director’s first Dark Fantasy game laid the foundation for one of his most famous pieces of work yet.

Released in 2009, Demon’s Souls became known for punishing players with an intense difficulty level, which attracted many for a change. However, how the game offers multiple endings has caused fans to speculate how one of them leads to the setting of the Dark Souls trilogy.

Dark Souls Trilogy – A Hidetaka Miyazaki Franchise Based On A Demon’s Souls Ending?

The possibility of this theory being true has been speculated by many over the years, including this particular user on Reddit, who suggests how the Demon’s Souls’ ending where the player chooses to slay the Maiden in Black laid the groundwork for the next big project Hidetaka Miyazaki was curating at the time.

Choosing to go with this ending would result in the world being covered in a deep fog. Eons later, in the world of Dark Souls, Gwynn’s discovery of the Lord’s Souls would mark the dawn of a new age. These souls ultimately become fragments of power and establish the framework for all the events to follow.

While on the surface the theory is a bit too speculative, a deeper examination of the two storylines reveals how both of them explore similar themes of decay and the pursuit of power at any cost, bringing us to our next point.

Hidetaka Miyazaki is a director known for having multiple layers within every game he creates, with some of them even correlating to elements from games he has previously produced. It is not impossible that the director, in crafting the lore of Dark Souls, drew inspiration from the narrative possibilities seeded in Demon’s Souls‘ multiple endings.

Nonetheless its connections to other games, it remains important to acknowledge how Demon’s Souls remains one of the most significant releases in Hidetaka Miyazaki’s career to date, as it was the first Soulsborne game he happened to release after Armored Core: The Last Raven.
