Time is of the essence when it comes to developing and releasing a game. This is something that Hidetaka Miyazaki, a renowned director and the president of FromSoftware knows very well, delivering back-to-back masterpieces in the past few years, starting with the release of Demon’s Souls back in 2009.

Interestingly, one of his games, Elden Ring, managed to stand out from the rest by taking a 5 year-long period of development before it was finally released in 2022. This is something that Baldur’s Gate 3 has also been under fire for, as players were only able to enjoy it after 9 long years of development and early access stages.

Being the latest Soulslike game made by Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring has performed well in the gaming industry, becoming the best-selling franchise of FromSoftware and even achieving the Game of the Year Award back in 2022 when it was released.

As noted by PC Gamer, who documented a visit to FromSoftware’s headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, the director remarked the following when talking about the time taken and the challenges faced during the making of the title.

Making a game as large and ambitious as Elden Ring was obviously not without its troubles… but it was also extremely fun

Miyazaki commented on how the game is one of the biggest projects he has worked on to date, and as expected, faced many challenges and troubles during the production. A bigger development period, as also seen in other games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 is not particularly liked by fans, but it ultimately allows the developers to make use of the given space and showcase their full potential, eventually delivering a great game that will be remembered for years to come.

Fans got the first look at the upcoming expansion back in February 2023, when FromSoftware abruptly released a Key Art for the said DLC on the game’s official social media platforms. This event catapulted gamers into the world of speculation and theories as they attempted to predict what exactly Hidetaka Miyazaki planned to deliver next.

Now, with 2 additional trailers and less than a week remaining before the imminent release of the Shadow of the Erdtree, gamers can’t help but feel how the game has come a full circle, considering how the DLC will be the first and only addition of content that the game will be getting.

Elden Ring is available to purchase on Steam.
